Miracle Makers: Keeping it Local

Miracle Makers is a series of 30 stories from Walmart and Sam’s Club associates to celebrate the companies’ 30th anniversary of fundraising for CMN Hospitals

For nearly 27 years, Shannon Brents has loved doing all she can for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. But she had no idea when she started as a Walmart associate that her efforts would hit so close to home.

“Five years after I started working at Walmart, my niece was born three months early. She only weighed two pounds, and spent the next four months in the NICU at St Rose Domincan Hospital. With help from CMN Hospitals, our local children’s hospital stepped in and provided so much help, like all the medical equipment.”

Now an Assistant Training Facilitator at the Walmart Academy, you’ll find Shannon helping out at local fundraisers like BBQs, potlucks, carnivals, and craft fairs. But the event closest to her heart, is the NICU party — a celebration for former critical condition babies and their families, who’ve “graduated” from intensive care.

Shannon is most impressed by the direct impact CMN Hospitals has on her hometown. “ It’s one of my favorite charities,” she says. “One hundred percent of the donations we gather go to our local hospital, and it stays local. I really love that it helps our own community.”
